subject: Does artificial grass have any disadvantages? [print this page]

Many people will agree with the many advantages of using artificial grass over natural grass but some might argue that the only and probably biggest disadvantage of artificial grass is the build up of heat due to the lack of water.

For the most part, they are correct. There is some heat build up and this may be higher than the heat build up of natural grass but even natural grass can holds heat. the only reall difference between natural grass and artificial grass is that natural grass holds less heat than artificial grass. How much less you may be wondering? Depending on the type of turf, around 35% less heat than artificial grass.

This is not a great deal higher than your natural lawn and even on a hot summers day, natural grass can get extremely hot if yo do not water your lawn. Watering your natural lawn may cool down your grass but this is a short term solution and will regain the heat once all the water has evaporated. The same applies to artificial grasss. You can water artificial grass in order to cool it down should you wish to have your kids run around on the lawn for the day but as with natural lawn this solution is short term. As soon as the water has evaporated, the artificial grass will regain the heat that was absorbed by water.

The bottom line is that even if you have natural grass over artificial grass, heat build up is a given with any type of lawn. The only reall difference is that artificial grass will hold around 35% more heat. Although this might seem like a disadvantage, consider what your water consumption bill would be if you had natural lawn in summer. the money save could be well spent on building a gazebo to cover the exposed area.
