Meathe fully understands the meaning of corporate responsibility. That's why he has given away leases of several new vehicles during the past few years to encourage blood donations to the American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region.
Meathe collaborated with the American Red Cross, a local radio station, a television station and his automotive dealership on marketing and awareness campaigns to fight blood shortages during peak seasons.
Meathe believes that people innately wish to do good for the community and that an incentive can help attract their attention to a meaningful cause. By offering individuals the chance to win the lease on a brand new vehicle when they came in to the American Red Cross sites to donate blood, Meathe was able to help bring in more than 100,000 units of blood over the course of four campaigns. The campaigns' grand prizes a Lincoln MKX, Mercury Mariner, Lincoln MKS, and a Mercury Milan were given to four lucky winners. A number of others donors received gas cards.
The way the campaigns worked was fairly simple. When new and regular donors came to various American Red Cross donation sites, they were invited to enter into the drawing for a lease. Finalists were subsequently selected in random drawings conducted by the American Red Cross.
"I believe that we all have the responsibility to do what we can to support our local communities," Meathe says. "Having an adequate blood supply at all times of the year is extremely important. It was heartwarming to see how many people showed they cared and helped ensure there would be blood available for those who need it."
Each pint of donated blood can save as many as three lives. Based on the number of pints donated during the campaigns, it is apparent that the events were successful.
