A lot of people these days who go out running, or who visit the gym on a regular basis to lift weight or take part in a class of some kind, or who enjoy any other kind of sport or exercise activity will spend a great deal of time choosing the best kit for themselve, buying expensive trainers with all kinds of fancy technology for comfort and performance, breathable clothing and all manner of gadgets to track their performance, monitor their physical responses and offer training advice to them.

But even when they are putting so much time and expense into choosing the best kit and equipment, they will often not even think about their choice of headphones to use at all, simply picking up the ones that they regularly use all of the rest of the time. I think this is crazy, because they can have much more of an impact on your overall experience than many of these other things.

Perhaps it is just that they have a very high quality pair of headphones at home, and think that because they are very good for general use, they will also be very good for running. But that isn't neccessarily the case. Here are some things that you might like to think about when buying running headphones:

If they have any kind of material on them, then they will soak up your sweat and get smelly. Soft plastic is better, and if they are water resistant you can also rinse them afterwards.

You won't want anything too bulky, or that is likely to slip around during rapid movement.

If you are running outdoors, then a set of top of the range noise cancelling headphones may give you a better audio experience of your music, but they may also get you run over if you have less of an awareness of hazards around you while you are out.
