Panic attacks can come swiftly and mercilessly without even so much as a warning. And when it does occur, a panic attack can leave a lasting impression on the sufferer. For instance, if a person experiences a panic attack while riding an elevator then that person, from then on will be too afraid to take the elevators and just stick to the stairs. In some of the worse cases, people come out of the panic attack with lasting phobias, fears that they carry with them forever. This is how disruptive panic attacks are to people's daily lives, and if you don't take any action to cure panic attacks, then you're basically putting your life on hold.

For most cases, panic attack medication is the first course of action, often because medications work fast. Most of these medications contain mild sedatives that effectively calm the central nervous system from going into overdrive and thus stop panic attacks abruptly. But there are drawbacks in using medications; most of them can be habit-forming if you're not careful with the dosages, and some even have nasty side effects. This is why medication is not recommended as a long-time cure for panic attacks.

Another course of action for treating panic attacks is psychotherapy. Since panic attacks stem from the brain and not from the body, it is important that the patients understand what events trigger these panic attacks. The therapist can help you discover what these triggers are and advise you on ways to avoid triggering panic attacks. By simply changing some of your cognitive patterns you can actually overcome an attack. It is recommended that you come in for weekly sessions with your therapist, but improvements can be seen in as early as a few weeks after you started. Though this method is undoubtedly effective, it can be rather costly, especially if you don't have medical insurance.

There are drawbacks to every kind of treatment; the trick is to find the one treatment that can actually help you without too much repercussions. It is up to you what kind of treatment you wish to go with.
