subject: Ps3 Dongle Was Hacked By Court [print this page]

The Australian court ruled a permanent ban on distribution of a hack for Sony's PS3(PlayStation 3). Meanwhile, the hackers who created the PS3 hack released the source code behind the hack to internet as "open-source".

ThePs3 Dongle, enabled users to load unlicensed homemade games on the PS3. Some other hackers have modified the hack which further allows pirated games to be played on the console.

The court's order prevents OzModChips, Mod Supplier and Quantronics from importing, distributing or sellingps3 dongle in Australia, and demands the distributors to hand over any stocks.

Similar court documents were reportedly received by distributors in other countries banning the sale of the dongles.

However, the hackers group which developed the dongles opened the source code, PSGroove, of the hack one day prior to the court's order.

One of the members of the hackers group who developed the PSGroove, Mathieu Hervais, said the purpose of releasing the hack source code is to let people run the software they like onPS3 dongle without having to be licensed by Sony.

"We released it on the internet because we believe in openness, choice and innovation from everyone. We understand (games console makers') point of view as well when it comes to protecting their income or business models, we just believe compromises could be made to keep everyone happy," he said.

The Sony has no comment on the court's decision or the release of the open-source code.
