On September 1st Nissan gave British motorists the chance to reserve' their place in history by placing an order for the world's first all -electric car for the mass market, the Nissan LEAF. UK motorists can now sign up for the EV online via the dedicated reservation website, putting down a refundable deposit of 257, the price of around one years LEAF electricity cost.

The Japanese manufacturer opened orders for the new Nissan LEAF to US customers in April, currently more than 18,600 people in the US have reserved their Nissan LEAF. Nissan North America announced on August 31st that customers who had made an online reservation could choose the colour and trim level of their 2011 Nissan LEAF model.

US Delivery of the Nissan LEAF is scheduled for December, whilst UK deliveries are expected to begin in March 2011. British customers who reserve online will be able to test drive the new Nissan later in the year and will be introduced to a specialist November who will confirm their delivery date for 2011.

The price for the new Nissan LEAF is 23,990, which includes the government's 5,000 incentive and car battery. Although 2011 Nissan LEAFs will be manufactured at Nissan's Oppama factory in Japan, from 2013 the LEAF will be built at the UK's Sunderland plant.

The new Nissan LEAF will be comes in five colours, and includes air conditioning, satellite navigation and a parking camera as standard. The Nissan LEAF is one of many new models from the Japanese manufacturer, which also include the Nissan Juke and all new Nissan Micra. Newport, and other UK dealers, expect the new Nissan Juke to be in showrooms from October and the Nissan Micra on forecourts from November.
