subject: Increasing Motivation To Accomplish Undesirable Tasks [print this page]

Motivation does not always come easily to everyone, especially when it comes to tasks or chores that you don't enjoy. Motivation is an important part of life.

We all have things that we need to do that we don't want to do. There are steps we can take to increase our personal enthusiasm for different activities.

First, find a passion or a good reason to be motivated. The biggest reason for a lack of motivation is a loss of enthusiasm.

When we feel passionate about something it gives us a boost of energy to get the menial things done so that we can accomplish the thing we desire. If you don't feel passion for the activity or task you should try to gain some new perspective.

You can do this by looking at the reasons why you need to accomplish the task. Whether it is for school, work, or your personal life there is a reason you need to do it. When you are able to see the bigger picture motivation tends to come easier.

Second, prioritize and plan your tasks. This will help you be able to accomplish things faster.

When you take the time to know what you need to do and when you need to have it done by it is more likely that you will do it. Set goals, get a planner, and make to-do lists. They will help you organize and conquer.

Third, set up a reward for accomplishing your tasks. This is very helpful for many people.

When you give yourself a reward then, even if you don't have the desire to do the task, at least you will have the desire to get the reward.

For example, let's say that you lack motivation for doing the dishes every night right after dinner. You also want to get a new pair of shoes.

With the reward system you say if I do the dishes right after dinner every night for the next two weeks then I will be able to reward myself with a new pair of shoes.

It is good to have to work on it for at least two weeks because it generally takes about 14 days to make a habit. This method can be very helpful in increasing motivation to do the things that are hard for you to accomplish.

Fourth, develop a support system to stay motivated. Now, what happens after you get your new pair of shoes?

Are you going to keep doing the dishes every night after dinner? Hopefully it is a habit by now, but if not, you should have some type of support system to help you stay motivated.

Make a chart where you can "x" the days off, ask your spouse or significant other to help keep you motivated, or use your kids as a support system.

When you take steps to increase your motivation you will be able to accomplish more and have a better attitude about doing undesirable tasks.
