Do you find yourself experiencing an uncontrollable desire to urinate? Do you have to know the location of every restroom before you'll go out in public? Have you had incidents where you just couldn't get to the rest room in time and experienced a leakage of urine? You may be suffering from urge incontinence a very common form of the condition that affects millions worldwide.

Incontinence by itself is not a disease but a symptom of underlying conditions. The conditions often associated with urge incontinence include spinal cord injuries, bladder infections, bladder stones, enlarged prostate, inflammation of the bladder and even stroke. In most instances, these underlying conditions agitate the bladder causing it to spasm and push urine into the urethra even though the bladder is not full.

Medication is available for this condition although it has the possible side effects of blurry vision, constipation and dry mouth. There are home remedies that involve changes in diet and lifestyle plus a specific exercise routine.

One remedy involves bladder training which is designed to "teach" your bladder when to go. This basically requires that you schedule trips to the bathroom, say once every tw hours to start, and then over a period of time expand the time between visits. This trains the bladder to void itself every 4 to 5 hours.

Another solution is to watch what you eat. Spicy foods have long been associated with irritating the bladder lining causing incontinence. Caffeine is a natural diuretic and consumption of coffee, tea and soda should be watched carefully to minimize the effect.

Kegel exercises are isometric exercises designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles which are responsible for supporting and protecting the bladder. These exercises require no special equipment and can be performed anywhere.

Urge incontinence can be treated and you don't have to alter your active lifestyle simply because you have the condition. Check with your physiscian for the therapy best suited for you.
