subject: Control your Blood sugar [print this page] You probably don't realise it but sugar is sabotaging your diet. To make sure you stick to a healthy diet plan you need to control your blood sugar levels.
Junk food and all processed foods are made up of simple carbohydrates, when we consume these foods they are digested very quickly by our bodies and this gives the body a rush of energy called a sugar spike because it pushes up the blood sugar really quickly. And then once it has peaked it comes crashing down leaving you feeling drained and craving a chocolate for an energy boost.
If you want to control your blood sugar you must never skip a meal, especially breakfast which you should eat as soon after you wake up as is possible for you, and definitely eat this before 9:00 am. You should also eat often, this keeps your metabolism working and gives you energy levels topped up because you are constantly refuelling. You must eat complex carbohydrates, heart healthy fats and lots of protein. Learn how to read food lables and be aware of how much sugar is in your food, and avoid any food and drink that has high fructose corn syrup in it.
My Guidelines for eating to control your blood sugar
Breakfast of champions: I like to start my day with oats (which can also help as a fat burner), especially as it starts getting cold and dark in the mornings, sprinkle with cinnamon or chopped fruit like blueberries and bananas, add honey instead of sugar.
Midmorning snack: snack on a handful of nuts (but only a handful as they are very high in fat) and a cup of plain low fat yoghurt or cottage cheese.
Lunch: Smoked salmon/ grilled salmon on wholegrain bread with salad is my all time favourite.
Mid afternoon snack: a piece of fruit
Evening meal: Red lentil curry and a side salad.
This is just one menu, but there are so many healthy and delicious options out there. And I definitely recommend preparing your own food, as all prepackaged food has so much hidden sugars and fats in them this will just give you that much more control over what you eat during the day. Stick to low GI foods as much as you can as these will help you control your blood sugar keeping it stable which will get rid of your cravings for junk food, for good.
