subject: Cleaning – It's Not So Bad After All [print this page]

When someone mentions the word cleaning', the groans are clearly audible. It's a task none of us particularly relish and would rather put off for as long as possible. How many people, as a student gripping their last two pounds, chose hygiene products over pizza or beer?

It is something however, that ultimately has to be done, both at home and at work. That office workers themselves should assist in keeping an office clean comes as a surprise to many, but it is necessary to minimise dirt and maximise the health of your staff. This doesn't mean equipping them with gloves and bleach then sending them to scrub the toilet, this is about using common-sense hygiene products to reduce the spread of germs.

Ensure each work station has a bottle of antibacterial hand gel at hand, and encourage workers to make use of the product, especially after sneezing or blowing their nose. These cheap, easily available hygiene products help to minimise the spread of germs from person to person, especially if your staff share office equipment like the phone and water vendor, where communal contact is common.

Other hygiene products to place around the office include antibacterial wipes, for cleaning areas like door handles and phones, which people routinely use every day. By preventing the spread of germs you will increase the health of your staff, as breeding grounds will be minimised. Healthier staff are more productive staff, so keeping the office clean will directly benefit the productivity of your business.

Most offices will employ a professional cleaning service to come in once or twice a week to clean the office thoroughly. However encouraging your staff to adopt a more hygienic approach means the professional services can focus on those tough, germ ridden spots like the bathroom whilst maintaining an overall level of cleanliness. Hygiene products like entrance mats are a great way of minimising outside dirt brought into the office; many suppliers will brand the mat for you, so you can not only keep the office clean, but advertise your business in the process.
