subject: Who do you think is the best striker in the Premier League? [print this page] I am going to put forward my debate and I would like to hear yours, I will be sure to reply and argue your case too! My vote is going to the Ivory Coast international and Chelsea target man Didier Drogba. I am not a Chelsea fan, but a Liverpool fan so please do not think this can be due to any bias. Firstly I believe an effective striker must make a nuisance for the defence and a presence in the box whether they are going to score a goal in the game or not. Their sheer presence can open up opportunities for other players on the pitch (In Chelsea's case, Malouda, Kalou, Lampard etc). I believe Drogba does this in nearly every game his height and strength means he is a constant threat whether balls are coming to his feet or up in the air for a flick on. The defence must constantly be aware of his presence and stick to tight marking with him to frustrate him.
Secondly, like every striker you must be able to score which Drogba does very effectively also. His finishing on a good day is excellent and on an average day is easily very good too. He has scored goals from all angles and places on the pitch. To add on to this, he is great at taking free-kicks and has scored a few in his time at Chelsea. Whilst also providing some goals from long range.
Also in the shooting department, his heading of the ball is another quality asset of his. His strength and height allows him to get up and beat many defenders to the balls giving him the chance to score. When given the chance to score from the air he usually takes it rifling balls into the net.
On top of his scoring abilities he is a good dribbler of the ball and technically very gifted too when he is not being greedy he can easily set up other players to score if he drifts wide to put in a cross or simply a through ball for the attacker in front.
So there's my number one striker.
