Whether you fly in and take the bus in from the Airport, drive in up the A1 or take the more romantic train to Waverly Station the city meets you with an atmosphere of grandeur and excitement. Squeezed between the Firth of Forth and the awesome Arthurs Seat nature seems to have defined exactly where the city must be. Indeed it hard to see where the castle starts and the rock it sits on stops.

The buildings of New town provide the ideal back drop to some seriously swanky shops. Superbly located on Princes Street this apartment has spectacular unrestricted views to Edinburgh Castle and offers visitors a rare opportunity to enjoy a city break at a prestigious address. This would be a good choice for a comfortable family holiday in a magnificent city centre location.

One of my own favourite spots is the Grassmarket, not because of its murky past as the scene of the execution of many covenanters in the 17th century, but rather for its convenience to the Royal Mile and some excellent pubs. We have the very opposite to the classic Scottish cottage here. The Duplex apartment has Edinburgh Castle majestically perched on the castle rock opposite and from the roof terrace it is up close and personal. The vista changes dramatically depending on the time of day, the ever-changing weather, when the Castle is illuminated, or with a backdrop of stunning sunsets.

If night live is what you like why not stay in a brewery - at least a disused one. This charming, unusual apartment forms part of the old Craigwell Brewery, which was established in 1822 and beautifully converted in 1980, winning an RIB Architect Award for the development.

To really immerse yourself in the history of the city you could stay in a traditional tenement building on the Royal Mile, the city's historic hub, this lovely apartment in Chessels Court is surrounded by some of Edinburgh's most fascinating and famous tourist attractions.

The Leith Docks give a welcome respite from the lively city and The Cooperage is a late 18th Century building, situated on the banks of the Water of Leith, and offers a delightful feature with the patio doors in the bedroom which open out onto the cobbled wharf on the banks of the river.

If you are planning ahead for Hogmanay perfect for a large group of friends or a family 'get together', this spacious 2nd floor apartment is in the city's West End only a few minutes walk from Princes Street. Edinburgh is a city with something for everyone and there is self catering accommodations for everyone at Mackays self catering Scotland.
