If you are after a great city to visit this autumn, then look no further than Amsterdam, with its sixty five miles of canals, almost three times the amount of Venice.

Explore the canals, particularly those round the Jordaan district for the most beautiful views, where you can see hundreds of houseboats and beautiful buildings. You can see the city's oldest bridge, the Torensluis, and some of the most jaw dropping buildings in the area. A maze of alleyways and canals, the Jordaan district is popular with students and youngsters, hungry for a taste of life in the city.

Dam square is another must see, nestled in the centre of the town and a popular meeting point for travellers and tourists, plus a spot where buskers flock to make the most of the crowds, visit the neoclassical royal palace if you want to see stunning architecture.

For something slightly different, visit the Museum of Bags and Purses, home to a timeline of the fashions in the area from the 16th century to present see handbags, pouches and aim bags, as well as evening bags and other glorious delights. As well as its permanent offerings, the museum also frequently offers displays from young and upcoming designers, so you can catch a bargain and a new trend if you are lucky. The museum sits in the historical Herenfracht building, built in 1664 for the major at the time it was restored in 2007 and now offers a little bit of a historical and modern twist.
