Hariharan who was born on April 3, 1955 in Tiruvananthapuram, Kerala is renowned Indian playback singer. He has sung songs in different Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, and Marathi. He is considered one of the best ghazal singers and also a pioneer of fusion music in India.
Hariharan was born to a traditional Iyer Family. His parents Shrimati Alamelu and the late H.A.S. Mani were noted vocalists of Carnatic Music. Hariharn grew up in Mumbai and is a bachelor in science and law.
Hariharan began his career with live concerts and also by performing occasionally on Television. The turning point is his career came when he won "All India Sur Singaar Competition" in 1977. Impressed with his talent, late music director Jaidev signed him on for his film Gaman(1978). The first song that he sang in the movie was "Ajeeb Saane He Mujh Par Qarar". The song became an instant hit and he was conferred on with Uttar Pradesh State Film Award in the same year.
Hariharan was inducted into Tamil films by debutant director A R Rahman in 1992. The first song that he sang for Rahman was "Thamizha Thamizha" a patriotic song from the Maniratnam's film Roja. Songs of Roja turned out to be box office nationwide. As the movie and songs were dubbed in other language too, Hariharan shot to national fame.
Hariharan has won two national awards for the best playback singer. While the first came for "Mere Dushman Mere Bhai" from the Hindi movie Border, the second was conferred on him for his Marathi song Jiv Rangla from the movie Jogwa.
Till date, Hariharan He has sung more than 500 Tamil songs and nearly a thousand Hindi songs. Harihanran also owns a band called Colonial Cuisines which he formed with a Bombay based musician Leslie Lewis in 1998.
