subject: Laptop TV Tuners Are A Great Accessory For Any Laptop [print this page]

I do not know what portion of computers sold now adays are laptops versus desktops however I am sure that the laptop share is growing. The benefits of laptops are obvious. Still, there are a few negatives but many of these are easy to overcome by adding some common and reasonably priced accessories.

A few accessories are inside a laptop but what that I will mention are external meaning they are quick to move between computers and you can choose whether to use them or not based on what you will be doing and where you will be doing it. You have plenty of choices to make to configure the system of your laptop (processor, hard drive, RAM, video card, drives and the like) but I am not going to get into those.

Portability is absolutely the biggest benefit of laptops because you are able to work, surf the internet, anything you use a computer for basically anywhere. However portability is also the cause of the biggest risks and concerns for laptop owners. Since you can take your laptop so many places more things can happen to it. You can leave it somewhere, it can get stolen, it can become damaged. These are the biggest nightmares for a laptop owner.

Aside from the monetary impact of a lost, stolen or damaged laptop, the most common worry is loss of the information on your hard drive. Backing up your hard drive is recommended for any computer but even more for a laptop. If you don't have a lot of data to backup you can use a USB 'thumb' drive as long as you can remember to back up your data periodically. External hard drives offer tons of storage space, they are very affordable and many can be programmed to automatically back up your hard drive on specified intervals. There are also some very affordable online backup services like mozy.com.

If you would like to store a lot of data an external hard drive is the best option. If there are music or video files that you are not interested in backing up because you have the original CD or DVD then you can use the external drive to store those files and you won't need to put them on the hard drive in your laptop. This will allow you to save money by selecting a smaller hard drive for your laptop.

The accessory I get the most enjoyment from is a laptop TV tuner. For under $100, a TV tuner for your laptop lets you watch over the air signals, cable and satellite channels and record TV on your laptop. If your monitor has high enough resolution many tuners can even process high definition signals.

To watch over the air broadcasts on your laptop you need an antenna. A few tuners have built in antennas while others come with an external desktop antenna that is about the size of beer or soda bottle. Larger antennas are only cost about $30. Your reception will depend on the city you live in and how far you live from the station's antenna however if you live in a major city chances are you can watch over the air signals in your backyard or at a tailgate party. Watching cable or satellite TV requires a subscription to the cable or satellite provider and the tuner must be connected to the cable or satellite cable.
