subject: How To Find Keywords That Convert [print this page]

Finding the right topic and keywords for your content is the key in order to get web traffic andpeople's attention which means money for you. Done well, keyword research helps you identify profitable buyersrather thanindivduals who are just browsing. For potential visitors to find your website, it must show up when they do a search. The trick is to find out which words people are searching for and be very specific in the use of those words. Your target audience may never find you if you choose them or use them incorrectly.

It can be complex to find keywords that people are searching for about your product. The words that you use may not be the same words that they are typing into a search engine to find you. Unlike them, you know a lot about your product. Search terms that are more popular are more likely to be entered into the search engines so you want to become relevant for those. You don't want to create a web page that nobody will be able to see because you are not targeting the correct keywords.

I never ever use any paid tools or anything special to research my keywords. There are many free tools to research keywords that do very nicely. I use theGoogle Adwords Tool to find high paying keywords.

If you have never used the adwords tool then you should play around with it for a little while first. Start with a general term and you will get some more defined keyword ideas. Then search on some ofthose to get an even more defined list. Using the adwords tool, I gather a list of keywords in notepad, then I research each keyword in Google to see how much competition there is and I also see if I can find any new keywords that are similar.

When you find some suitable, long keywords, check the top 5 sites that come up in a search for those. Competitors have done the work for you. Most websites place their important keywords in the META tags which is the code above the body tag. Also look at the name of the page and the page title as these areas will have important keywords. Take a look at the links in the sidebar and footer, most of the time when people make site wide links on a keyword, that means that the keyword is somewhat important.

Once you have your keywords list, it is important to evaluate the potential effectiveness of them. A quick search for the keyword will show the number of results that appear so you can assess its popularity. You should look into each particular keyword you are promoting with and make sure that the keyword will get you a sale or lead and not just normal traffic where people are just browsing around.

When you create an article, web page or web site, the title and content of the site should contain the words that people would be typing in to a search engine. Make sure to incorporate them on your landing pages, on the title, meta tags and on the body of your webpage. This will ensure you get found and have well-targeted traffic for years to come.
