Bacterial vaginosis or BV is an infection of the female reproductive system, especially the vagina. This reproductive system problem is often mistaken as candidiasis or trichomoniasis. The former is commonly known as yeast infection and the latter is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis.

Normally, a woman's vagina has naturally occuring bacteria in it. This is to protect the reproductive system from harmful microorganisms. However, when the delicate pH balance of the vagina is disrupted, bacterial vaginosis results. The term pH or power of hydrogen is the degree of acidity of a substance or an object. Contrary to popular belief, this infection is not sexually transmitted but this occurs in most women during their child-bearing years.

In some cases, the symptoms of this infection are not really observed. However, the common symptom of this disease is the occurrence of a discharge. The bacterial vaginosis discharge has an unpleasant odor and this can vary in color. Some women have whitish discharge while some have yellow or greyish discharge. This condition is not really considered to be extremely dangerous but if left untreated, the bacterial vaginosis discharge may worsen.

The bacteria may also travel up to the cervix and uterus, causing more serious problems. This may cause pregnancy problems such as miscarriages. Additionally, the risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases increases for women who have untreated bacterial vaginosis. Due to the disruption of the natural pH balance, the vagina does not get enough protection anymore. Getting medical consultation is really important to treat this problem.
