subject: Elevate a Space with Wooden Furniture [print this page]

Whilst in the modern age function is often valued as much as style, and minimalist dcor that offers functionality without crowding a living space is the "in thing"; this does not necessarily preclude traditional styles from the home and simply by incorporating more classical kinds of furniture, as well as traditional materials, you can really give a space a style edge without compromising its functionality or modernity.

With this in mind, wooden furniture in particular has the unique facility to be able to both serve as highly functional pieces, as well as retaining its inherent stylistic properties. But how can you incorporate wood into the home, without compromising on the modernity of a space?

Whilst wood might have a reputation as a distinctly traditional material, some kinds of wood convey a more contemporary aesthetic think of light coloured pine, for example, which can be incorporated into a minimalist space, to add a touch that uber-cool Norse aesthetic.

Of course wood works best in certain key pieces of furniture, and just by incorporating wooden bookshelves, or other kinds of shelving perhaps shelving for DVDs etc you not only get the functional advantage of high quality shelving, but you also naturally incorporate some wood into a home thereby elevating the space.

Other items of wooden furniture can also fit neatly into modernist dcor depending of course on personal taste, as well as room space etc and by choosing statement pieces, such as an armoire, but housing it in a room decorated to contemporary standards, you can really make a stylistic statement with your wooden furniture!

So, there is a tendency for modern interior design to label materials according to their suitability for certain styles of room/home, however this is a mistake, and the key to good interior design in creativity so why not get creative with that wooden furniture?
