subject: Arresting The Effects Of Aging With Fiber [print this page]

Aging used to be something that people simply accepted as an inevitable part of life. These days however, people have been actively trying to arrest aging. Women are more concerned about how aging affects their physical appearance while men are more interested in how it affects their bones and their brains. Aging has become a major area of health research. In fact, recent studies show that the rate of people afflicted with brain and bone diseases have increased. These diseases may lead to the overall deterioration of the health and wellness of an individual.

With the increased awareness about the issue, nutritionists and other experts have been trying to find ways to curb or at least delay the health problems caused by aging. After much research, their conclusion is that aging may be delayed by making wise food choices and practicing portion control when eating. These rules are set within the context of a specific diet plan which is the high fiber diet.

A high fiber diet consists of meals rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and it offers many health benefits. Those related to aging include the promotion of weight loss and the elimination of toxins from the body.

As we age, our metabolism slows down and the result is weight gain. With the weight reducing effect of a high fiber diet, this age related weight increase can be controlled. Fiber expands in the stomach which creates a feeling of fullness even with just a little food. Because this lasts for a long time, hunger is eliminated and unnecessary snacking is avoided. This appetite suppressing effect makes it easier for a person to lose weight.

Fiber also works like a sponge by absorbing unwanted fats, cholesterol and toxins that have built-up along the walls of the intestinal tract. All these unwanted substances are flushed out of the system through bowel movements. At the same time, being on a high fiber diet encourages regular elimination which in turn supports digestive health.

This cleansing function of fiber likewise promotes cardiovascular health because the removal of cholesterol promotes more efficient blood circulation. With the healthy flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart, it can stay in good condition and be less susceptible to various types of disorders.

Thanks to fiber, we no longer have to resign ourselves to the negative health effects of aging. A high fiber diet is the natural, safe and inexpensive way to stay younger a little bit longer.
