subject: Laser Periodontal Surgery in a Periodontal Private Practice of 26 years [print this page] In our Periodontal specialty practice of 26 years we have documented over 500 clinical cases of laser periodontal surgery. Many of these cases would have been treated with conventional or traditional surgery (cutting, sutures, flaps) before the laser protocol was approved by the FDA.
We categorize Laser Periodontal surgery into full and partial cases. In each case, we have seen significantly faster healing, minimal post-operative discomfort, and a more "patient friendly" experience. In addition, we have retained more teeth (fewer extractions) than in prior years when we exclusively utilized more traditional surgical techniques.
There are several advantages to an approved laser protocol. We typically see a more predictable clinical response. The healing response is several weeks ahead of traditional surgery in our periodontal specialty practice. Many questionable teeth have also been retained that would have been extracted during the earlier years of using just traditional techniques. And even in the extractions that we perform in our periodontal specialty practice today, the laser enhances a faster healing response than traditional extractions.
We are able to use the laser treatment on patients without having to stop their medications such as blood thinners, cardiac medications, and other systemic medications. This makes the process quicker, safer, and easier from a medical point of view in our practice setting.
We often treat laser periodontal surgery cases in one visit, thereby eliminating the need for multiple traditional surgical visits that were necessary before the laser approval. Treating periodontal disease in one visit in our practice has produced better clinical outcomes than the traditional surgery done in multiple visits. We often treat periodontal disease in patientspriorto cardiac bypass surgery, stent procedures, prosthetic replacements (hips and knees-for example), chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and many other medical conditions.
In conclusion: The addition of a FDA cleared laser protocol has changed the treatment of choice in approximately 80% of the periodontal disease treatment in a private periodontal practice of 26 years.
We are currently preparing all our laser patient data, photographs, and radiographs (x-rays) for publication.
