subject: Natural Birth – How to Know When It's Natural? [print this page]

A lot of people would declare that when one uses treatment drugs when giving birth, it is no longer classified as natural birth.

Nowadays, with so much improvements and innovations in modern medicine, there has been a rise in the number of techniques to give birth other than the usual natural birth technique. Sometimes, women giving birth are given drugs like morphine and even endorphin to help during the process of labor. Question is, does it make it not a natural birth?

How about women who are taking HypnoBirthing or HypnoBabies classes? Is hypnosis a natural way to give birth? Many would say that it is a natural birth while others would think otherwise.

There are greater and more complicated methods of giving birth such as the Caesarean method. Also known as the C-section, it is a procedure where an incision is made in the woman's abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. It is used in cases when the baby is in distress or vaginal birth is difficult or not possible. This type of delivery is not normally considered as a natural birth. However, an animal called the Nile crocodile might not quite agree with that. If a Nile hatchling is not able to hatch itself, the mother or father will hear the chirping from within the egg and will make the move to the egg open by rolling it between their tongue and the upper palate of the mouth to crack the shell. Once this is has been done, the baby Nile is out. And if you ask these animals if they have given natural births, you bet they will say they have.

All animals evolve and that includes human beings. And we all have to discover ways to provide the safest natural birth possible to our offspring. So what difference does it make if we, human beings, also create ways to make giving birth as pleasant and painless as possible? Whatever the type of delivery method is employed, whether it is an epidural or Caesarean, we often have to ask questions that serves as our criteria of an ideal birth program and these are:

Did the mother feel she had total control of the method?

Was the method performed as calmly and gently as possible?

Did the mother feel relaxed throughout the whole method?

Did the mother feel a sense of empowerment after giving birth?
