subject: Hair Transplant Treatment [print this page]

Hair transplant treatment is a surgical procedure that aims to restore a person's lost hair due to reasons such as male baldness, trauma, burns, and surgery. In this treatment, hair follicles are taken out of the hair growing scalp on the back and side of the head and then transferred and planted again on the barren areas. The removal and transplantation of hairs involve the use of clinical devices such as blades, needles, and knives, and this why the treatment is also often called punch grafting or plug grafting.

The value being put in beauty and youth increased tremendously in the past few years, pressuring men to become more conscious about their looks. As a result, more and more men are seeking for solutions to address their baldness problem, and this in turn leads to continuous advancements in hair transplant treatment.

As mentioned, the procedure entails gathering follicles from hair bearing areas. These follicles have to be carefully grouped into a basic unit called grafts. Physicians typically categorize the size of grafts based on the number of follicles in it. There are micro grafts, slit grafts, and mini grafts, though physicians traditionally use a standard round graft which consists of about 10 to 20 follicles.

The number of grafts to be used for your hair transplant treatment basically lies on the size of the bald area you want to cover. To give you an idea, cut a square paper measuring 3 inches in all sides. This size asks for about 400 to 600 standard round grafts, depending on the fullness of the hair. Each standard graft is charged for about $3 to $12.

Note that male baldness pattern is a progressive condition, so you may have to undergo a series of follow-up hair transplant treatment if you want to keep the fullness of your hair. Needless to say you need to save up a considerable sum of money to afford the sessions and maintain the look.

Aside from hair transplant treatment, the physician may also suggest other surgical techniques like flaps transfer, wherein a huge portion of hair bearing scalp is transferred to the bald area; and scalp reduction, wherein the scalp is strategically removed in chosen areas in order to minimize the impression of baldness.
