subject: Dandruff In Dogs- Things To Know [print this page]

Dandruff in dogs generally occurs when the dogs skin cells naturally form, die, and flake off at a very fast rate. Is there a way to control this? Yes, there is. Following are some steps which can help solve the problem of dandruff in dogs.

1. Make sure to give your dog regular baths to wash away the flakes before they start to accumulate as dandruff generally happens due to flaky skin. You can keep the schedule as once a month during the winter season and twice a month in the summer time. Also, use warm water to bathe your dog. Use of a mild shampoo like regular baby shampoo is a good step. Remember to rinse your dog properly and dry it well.

2. You can use the colloidal oatmeal soap that even humans use for dry skin to help relieve flaking. Oatmeal soap is very good for dogs with dandruff as it moisturizes dry skin.

4. Spray your dogs coat with an oil rinse to lubricate the skin and lock in moisture. This oil rinse is easily available online and in pet stores. This is especially important if you live in a dry climate.

5. Using the same moisturizing lotion or cream that you use on your hands can also help in getting the moisture down really deep.

6. Remember to groom your dog regularly. This will help to distribute natural oils evenly over your pets dry skin and will keep the dandruff down. Choose a brush that is not too harsh.

7. You need to monitor if your dog is getting adequate amount of vitamins and minerals in its diet in order to maintain a healthy skin. Sometimes, dandruff in dogs occurs because dogs are not getting enough fat in their diets.
