subject: Che Kung Miu A Place Of Honour And Tradition [print this page]

The Che Kung Miu Temple built as a memorial for one of Chinas most distinguished military leaders known, as Che Kung is located in Hong Kong. This building of honour portrays the fearless generals life and his successful attempts to keep the state alive after his involvement in bringing Prince Ping and his brother to the south. Che Kung was the general of the Chinese military during the Southern Song Dynasty in 1127 1279.

The Che Kung Miu Temple originally built in 1644 during the Ming Dynasty was followed by three renovations during the years 1890, 1993 and 2004 respectively. There are apart from the Che Kung Miu a few more temples scattered around Hong Kong, built in honour of the general.

The attraction that brings about a thousand visitors annually caused the government to close the original temple and construct a new temple for visitors to embrace. The new temple sits right in front of its successor and it was built in the year 1994. The old Che Kung Miu Temple is only open on occasion due to its classification as a Grade II historical building. The modern Che Kung Miu Temple, built in a Japanese style is eight times the size of its original. Visitors to the new temple can see a giant man made statue of Che Kung, a fan bladed wheel of fortune and other ancient artefacts. Fortune tellers can also be found within the temple.

Sightseers can also see other temples that are dedicated to Che Kung in close proximity to the Che Kung Miu Temple. One such temple that overlooks the Ho Chung River is the Che Kung in Ho Chung built in the 16th century. Others include the Chung Shing Temple and the I Shing Temple in Hong Kong. These temples have all been declared historical monuments.
