subject: Interview with tenCube, developers for WaveSecure [print this page]

Way back in the bottom last year, I reviewed a beta version of security applications called big WaveSecure . At that time, despite some niggly faults, it was evident that this is a special app. Those niggly faults and managed to solve WaveSecure continue to become one with the overall winners of ADC2.

WaveSecure safety is an application that allows you to remotely lock and / or cleaning of mobile phone, they should be lost or stolen. You can also use it to backup and restore messages, contacts, etc., and even use the phone, location-based services to track down where the phone is lost or stolen, has ended. It is important that the application for anyone who leads confidential or important data around them on the phone.

WaveSecure developers, Singapore-based tenCube , published versions of many applications for mobile OSes such as Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Blackberry. , And from their About page, that are considered one of the Top 100 start-ups in Asia by Red Herring, as well as Top 16 Global launch of the Intel Berkeley entrepreneurial challenge. WaveSecure received the Top 10 wireless innovations by Frost Sullivan and is one of six recipients of GES Award of the Asian Wall Street Journal.

tenCube people very kindly agreed to answer a few questions about your experience with Android WaveSecure ever published and discussed their future plans for the application.

First, can you tell us a little about tenCube and its experience in developing mobile applications

started about 5 years ago. Were a startup looking for something cutting edge geeks do, and we especially like mobile so we focused our energy on thinking about the future mobile then. It was quite obvious that open source software on a standard mobile operating systems(currently often simplified so that only applications, which often entails simple programs and may understate the potential of Mobile).

We started looking at various applications that may be of interest, and then one day, almost by accident, we found our goal, as seen in the next question.

What was the inspiration for WaveSecure? Does anyone in the company to lose cell phone, or stolen,

Exactly, his classic tale. One of the founders, Varun Chatterji, lost his brand new phone, Nokia 6600, which was very expensive and advanced phone then. So it dawned on us that really the biggest problem we face in the mobile industry is the simple fact that people lose their phones? anything between 5-25% of the population, depending on the location, the phone loses the year. It was already pretty huge problem then, with almost one billion mobile phones. And this is just be more massive, within five years the problem has tripled to 3 billion mobile phone users, most of them are getting more and more important things in my phone? e-mail, text messages / IM, photos, browsing, social networking, banking, etc.

More importantly, the basic idea is that? must not have ever lose your phone. Phones are always on, always connected is an elegant and meet a lot of data and the possibility of sending them wirelessly. You can lose your wallet, keys and can not be restored, are stupid items offline, but there is absolutely no reason why you should lose your phone!

And all about changing that.

WaveSecure is available on various mobile operating systems, which is the most popular format

user base, the largest yet Symbian S60. However, the pace of growth, Android is definitely sky rocketing.

Are you with us little about the development cycle for applications? Is everything all over again the code for any phone OS, or code in one coding environment and port titles with

We wish we can code in one environment and the port on all platforms, but unfortunately it is not as easy as it sounds. This is especially complicated because WaveSecure access to a large number of low-level API system and all the clients for different platforms WaveSecure interface with the server.

Some platforms such as BlackBerry and Android can share code, because they are both based on Java. However, a common code of only about 40%, while the rest had to be written from scratch.

From the perspective of the development cycle of the four main platforms that support(Android, Symbian, WM, BB) are conducted by different teams of independent cycles. This approach is usually in regard to the new features is a platform for implementation in the first place, and the specifications are validated and The Kinks + flows are eliminated and the remaining part of the platform emulation.

Many users, including I learned about a WaveSecure when it was announced that the application will be bundled in the ROMs own MoDaCo Hero. How did it happen, Mr Paul approach, can make contact with you?

Paul sent us an e-mail 2 lines after about 2 weeks of listing our application on Android Market and asked if he could distribute our applications with custom MoDaCo ROM. We were not sure what to expect, but we are very pleased to work with Modaco because we believe in the long run, that a product like WaveSecure should be as part of the OS / firmware, they should be by default and should be resistant to all attacks, such as software reset, etc. Modaco is a very good step towards a standard that users Modaco and are very experienced users who understand the benefits of integrated WaveSecure ROM immediately.

It was a pleasant surprise. As you said, but many people that hear about us on the ground and we have great feedback from the community MoDaCo(not to mention a fantastic extended test of very talented members who gave us very valuable). It has helped us improve application tremendously. It so happened that this was a critical period September November 2009 Where a lot of new Android devices(OS versions) has begun and we have much help from the community MoDaCo support for new devices, networks, etc.

Paul to us in this ROM MoDaCo certainly contributed to the ADC to win and we are grateful for that. We continue to work closely with the community MoDaCo and plan to continue to offer WaveSecure free to members MoDaCo WaveSecure premiums paid once the application is on 1 st April , 2010.

How did publish applications on the Android Market? Do you think that there is nothing you can do to improve on the market? And, as a stack of applications to other markets, OS

In comparison to other shopping applications, the filing and approval of applications in the Android Market is relatively free of confusion. However, the tool available for publishers to measure the performance of applications is rather limited. In addition to the total number download, Market does not offer any other metric related toperformance. You can not even separate downloads per month, or country. Google Analytics provides the market seems like a logical move. They are already offering similar integration with AdSense and AdWords.

More can be done to help publishers, too. Starting from the simple but important things like increasing current325-limit signs in the online auction description. The app in the Android Market http://www.android.com/market/ actually makes it difficult to search for people from different applications. In fact, you can not even perform a search, the type of irony coming from Google. It is obvious void prompted so many places, such as users of alternative Androlib offer better and richer.

If Google Checkout offers the only form of payment, to cover the country needs to be expanded so developers can make better programs for him. Other, other means of payment may be offered.

Do you publish your applications to none of the unofficial market Android? If so, how you found that experience?

Yes, we released the unofficial Android Markets. The experience of publishing it was pretty smooth, but the experience from the perspective of a non-user to discover the top 50 applications may be better. He said that this is a problem with the Android Market, as well as

What device you are using to test which(if any) Android device using the everyday stuff?

Android We do a lot about equipment and how they redouble our testing devices. Given the fragmentation of the platform, we have to work for a wide range of Android devices in the home in order to ensure that we have discussed many Android devices as possible. In the list of devices that, for each test release includes:

1 HTC Dream(time, Android 1.6)

2 HTC Dream(rooted Android 1.5)

3 HTC Hero(rooted, MoDaCo)

4 HTC Hero(time, 1,5)

5 Nexus One(time, 2.1)

6 HTC Tattoo(time, 1.6)

7 GeeksPhone One(rooted, 1.5)

8th Sony Ericsson X10(time, 1.6)

If its great that a new feature, which requires the introduction of testing equipment / networks that do not have access to here in Singapore(eg . droid and Sprint Hero), we can use in our master users who are very helpful in helping us test new features!

Personally, the best are our favorites? Dream, Hero and X10

What are your favorite free and paid applications for Android

1 Millionaire(Japanese playing cards, is no longer available on Android Market)

2 Pinball by Androlib

3 Remote Desktop Pro

4 Log collector

5 Advanced Task Killer

6 Shazam

7 Wireless Tether for user root

(wont be so arrogant to WaveSecure list, but we would like to know if readers think that part of the list!)

How did you find developing for Android? Is there any tools and features that youd want to see that now includes arent

Android SDK has a good set of tools. Its always a good sign if the platform allows you to focus more on the logic of business applications and workflows than theintricacies implementation. It is quite easy to do multiple tasks at the Android, which can occupy a lot of time on other platforms. One the biggest plus points that Android is in relation to other mobile platforms development isthat it greatly reduces the time needed to test small code modifications.

As open source is very helpful as well, referred to Android source code many times to see how it is done and learned by example.

Most ourgrievancehas from the restrictions that were introduced after the 3rd party applications. Turn on the GPS software, the ability to trap the key to the house, etc. You can add a lot more value WaveSecure.

Whats next from the team? Further updates WaveSecure, or are you planning for something completely new?

WaveSecure believe has much more potential to be the ultimate killer app security, and we are much more to go for this purpose. Not only in terms of making the product better by increasing its functionality and features, but also many pracy it into a mask for scalability, speed, reliability, SMS infrastructure, productivity, etc. We are working on this almost 5 years now and not stop until we actually solve this problem once and for all.

Can you give us a little teaser of what any new features will WaveSecure

O is a lot of new things that add to WaveSecure in the near future, in a heads-up this month, we kind of invented a technique to defeat, that you can easily uninstall the applications for Android. This is very exciting as we think, is to add much value to users, so watch out for an update soon!
