subject: Treating genital herpes with Acyclovir and Valtrex [print this page]

Genital herpes is a viral infection that affects the genitals, anal area and the buttocks. Caused by the herpes simplex virus, this condition is characterized by the formation of painful sores on the affected area. But, not everybody suffers from the symptoms, which makes this a very confusing condition to diagnose. Once this condition is diagnosed by a doctor, chances are that you will be given an anti-viral medication treatment such as Valtrex or Acyclovir.

Treatment with Valtrex

Its active ingredient valacyclovir, works by inhibiting the action of DNA polymerase, an enzyme that is used by the herpes simplex virus to replicate and spread. Blocking this viral enzyme prevents the virus from copying its genetic material from one cell to another, which in turn stops the virus from spreading. As the multiplication of the virus, stops, it can be restricted to a particular part of the body. This helps your body's immune system act against it effectively and also more quickly.

Treatment with Acyclovir

The action of this medication is very similar to that of valacyclovir, and it helps prevent the spread of the herpes simplex virus by preventing its replication. The virus needs an enzyme known as DNA polymerase in order to multiply, but it is denied this enzyme due to the action of this medication. Once the medication has done its duty by limiting the spread of the virus, the immune system of your body gets into the act by treating the symptoms of your condition.

Treatment dosage

Both the medications are prescription sexual health treatments, and must only be taken in the recommended dosage. If you think you are suffering from genital herpes, you must immediately make your way to a doctor. It's your doctor, who is going to prescribe the medication and the particular dosage for you.

Valtrex is available in the dosage strengths of 500mg and 1gm. For an initial episode of genital herpes, the recommended dosage of this medication is 1gm, for ten days, two times a day. Treatment for a recurrent episode of genital herpes is a 500mg tablet that must be taken two times a day, for three days. Treatment of the initial outbreak is effective if you begin the recommended dosage within two days of having experienced the first symptoms of this condition.

Acyclovir is available in dosage strengths of 200mg, 400mg and 800mg. A doctor will prescribe a dosage dependant on the severity of your condition as well as your health. The drug needs to be taken immediately after experiencing the symptoms in order for it to be effective.

Treatment side effects

Both medications are well tolerated by most people. Some of the side effects that are common for both medications include headache, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, body ache, problems in liver and kidney functions, swelling of hands and feet, and in some cases loss of memory. Before you take these medications, it's important that you check whether you are allergic to any of the ingredients that make up the medication. If you are, it's best to avoid them. You should also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, a nursing mother, suffering from kidney problems, or are suffering from AIDS. Also don't forget to tell your doctor about your current intake of medications both prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
