subject: Cost Effective and Practical Kitchen Valances [print this page]

Kitchens are generally one of the busiest areas of the home for many people. A lot of cooking activity takes place in the kitchen with pots of vegetables steaming and fry pans sizzling on red-hot stove elements. To dispose of cooking odours a canopy-hood fan can effectively dispose of most smells, but steam and humidity can sometimes be difficult to stop permeating the atmosphere in the kitchen. Accidents can also happen for example someone could leave a toaster turned up too high that can leave the kitchen full of smoke from burnt toast.

Choosing an appropriate stylish kitchen valance that can look good in such a busy work environment can therefore be difficult and requires some thought by the homeowner. Fitting a cheap polyester valance that can be simply washed when soiled and stained may seem the practical solution to have in a busy kitchen. But would it suit an ultra modern kitchen fitted with state of the art appliances?

The other option of having kitchen valances made of a classy velvet or silk fabric may not be the best option as the material will eventually become stained and discoloured from over exposure in a steamy humid and smoky type atmosphere. Whatever choice is made a valance will be subject to those unfortunate accidents that seem to happen in the kitchen such as unintentional spray from a can of fruit juice, beer or bottle of wine that could end up on your expensive valance.

Fitting an inexpensive cotton blend valance may be the answer provided the pattern and style blends in with your kitchen color scheme. There are also cheaper valances made of polyester material that are cheap and readily available at many curtain retail outlets that can be easily washed and replaced if necessary.

Selecting a stylish kitchen valance therefore is not easy because whatever material or fabric that is chosen needs to be balanced against what is both practical and functional. Generally, what is important and needs to be considered is your personal taste and the overall objective of having the kitchen look light and fresh looking.
