subject: Do Not Be Scared To Use Colour When Decorating [print this page] A simple decision at face value, choose a paint colour or colour scheme for the home. This can turn even the strongest amongst us into quaking wimps. The fear of picking the wrong colour has many home-owners paralysed and unable to make a choice. It is possible to hire a professional decorator or Colour Design Expert to help you solve your colour selection dilemma. However, for those who would rather take action on their own you should use an easy technique that I recommend to my clients and decorating workshop students.
1. Make a trip to your local home improvement centre and head straight for that paint department. Pick whatever colour you are taking a fancy to. Don't worry about where youll be using the colour for now. Just have a good time with your choices. It will assist you to reduce the intimidation of choosing a colour. This is often the initial step in overcoming your fear.
2. Grab you favourite fashion magazines and cut out images with colours you find attractive. After all, if you are drawn to a colour in make-up or fashion, odds are you will like that colour in your home.
3. Find an inspirational piece in your house which you absolutely love. Use the colours from that piece to guide you in your colour selections.
4. Buy sample pots of paint colours that you have selected and apply them to a tiny part of your wall (tape it to your wall). Watch how the colour changes through out your day, watch the way it responds to sunlight and artificial light. If you definitely love the colour, then buy it and begin painting. If you don't enjoy it then replicate this exercise.
Remember that choosing a paint colour or colour scheme for your own home is absolutely not a life or death choice. Approach the decision using a sense of humour and adventure knowing that regardless if you choose right or wrong, at least you made a decision. If you chose the colour you like Congratulations. If you chose a colour that you decided you didn't like Congratulations too! You are just one step closer in finding the colour that defines your character and one step further away from the fear of using colour.
Dont be afraid to go with your colours that you want, it doesn't matter what anyone else might think. If you like it, then this is all that counts. You will not please every one, it doesn't matter what you pick to put on your walls. I could give you a lot of examples where We have gone in to a home and felt sick with what other people have chosen, but they like it. That is all that matters these days.
