subject: 5 Things Not To Do When You Feel Someone Is Pulling Away [print this page]

Being in a relationship is not always givingBeing in a relationship is not always giving. We sometimes feel the need to be reevaluate our situation or simply to have some time for ourselves. If you feel that your partner is pulling away, try to see things from his/hers point of view and dont drive them further away with your behavior.

When we find ourselves in a situation like this, many of us feel the urge to fight to get them back, which can actually make things worse. Here are some of the things that you must not do when you feel that your loved one is pulling away.

Dont panic. The first thing you need to do is to understand why they are pulling away. Wanting some time apart does not always mean they want to break up with you. If you panic you will start to behave irrationally, but this is the time to be calm and collected.

Dont be clingy. Crying, begging, and trying to convince them of your undying love will not do any good at this point. If they are pulling away from you, simply means they need some space. Being clingy means restricting their space even more, and this can only drive them even further.

Dont blame yourself. If your partner is pulling away, dont start by thinking it has to be your fault, that you must have done something wrong. Maybe it has nothing to do with you, maybe they simply need some alone time. When people pull away, they might not feel the need to explain themselves, they might not even know why they are doing it.

Dont suffocate them. This is not a good idea even when things are great. When your relationship is going through a crisis, suffocating your partner will only bring more problems. Dont force them to talk about it, dont ask for constant explanations, and dont be in their face all the time. This will back fire and you will end up loosing them altogether.

Dont give them ultimatums. If you want to save your relationship, this is not the time to be assertive. Threatening them or forcing them to make a decision is a very bad idea when they are pulling away. This situation requires a diplomatic approach.

Feeling that your loved one is pulling away from you can be a scary feeling. All sorts of scenarios go through your mind: maybe they are seeing someone else, maybe they want to break up with meTry not to imagine the worst, be calm, understanding and give them space. This might just save your relationship.
