subject: Choosing The Perfect Hot Tub [print this page]

Luxurious hot tubs, once the realm of the super rich, have become much more accessible and widespread in recent years, and with good reason. Relaxing in your back garden, enjoying the view, can be the perfect way to end a busy day.

A hot tub is essentially a tub situated above or in the ground, with heated and jetted water. Other common names for these tubs include spa, Jacuzzi (which is in fact a trade name for a company that builds them) and whirlpool.

Before buying a tub it is important to decide whether you want it to be in or above ground. The latter option is less expensive, as there is no excavation and added building costs. Another option is a portable spa, which can also be moved should the owner decide to move house. It can also be brought inside and is therefore often considered the more flexible option.

Before buying an outdoor tub, take some time to think about where it will be sited. Consider how much privacy will be needed, along with accessibility. Take care not to put the tub under overhanging trees or bushes, unless you want to spend a lot of time fishing out leaves!

The size of your hot tub will depend on how many people you think will need to use it. As a rule of thumb most suppliers recommend multiplying 284 litres, or 75 gallons, of water by the number of people likely to use the tub to reach the total water capacity needed.

All that water will weigh heavily, so you will need a concrete slab or a very sturdy deck to put the hot tub on.

The look of a hot tub is also important. While most hot tubs are made of acrylic, wooden ones can look more attractive. However, this needs to be balanced with the fact that the wooden ones require more cleaning and do not have moulded seats. Portable hot tubs are usually made of vinyl.

Also, of course with an eye on budget, consider what features will make your hot tub all the more practical or inviting. For instance, a thermostat will keep the temperature under control, while a lockable cover will mean extra safety for those with children as well as preventing bugs and leaves falling into the tub.

A good supplier can help you through all of these decisions and provide all the information you need to get the Hot tub of your dreams.
