subject: A Guide To Folding Bikes [print this page]

People for years have been using bikes for fun and transportation. Throughout these years has been the difficulty to transfer bikes from one place to another when not riding them. We have all sat there and needed to find a truck or a large SUV so we could bring our bike on vacation. Many of us have dealt with the cumbersome bike racks that can be placed on the front and back of many of our cars. This is where folding bikes can come into play for many of us.

Folding bikes do exactly what the name says by folding into a smaller package. I purchased my first folding bike from a fisherman that would travel from the Bahamas and back. He would keep the bike folded in the cabin of his boat and have it to travel on the island when he arrived. He told me that having a folding bike made it easier for him and his wife to have more space when they traveled.

That first folding bike of mine was a Dahon which has been producing these types of bikes for over 25 years. At first I was worried that I would be unable to use this bike as a regular rider. I found out quickly though the build was of high quality and took the daily abuse of the Florida summer sun. I just always double check the clamps to make sure to bike stays open has you don't want your bike to fold when riding.

I was also surprised on the options that I had when looking for a folding bike. You can find bikes that cruise, sports bikes and more plus at plenty of sizes. You will find that these bikes will start in the $150 range and can go up from there. The investment is well worth it as you will be able to fit your new bike in almost regular sized trunk.

So the next time you are looking to replace your bike take a look at the folding market. These bikes are meant to take a beating but also are more compact and easier to store and transport.
