subject: Taking Care Of Your Expensive Rings [print this page]

Rings can hold great financial and sentimental value. This is why it is crucial that we know how to take care of them and protect them from being lost or damaged. Here are some handy tips...

Don't Lose Your Ring!

Losing a valuable ring or a ring passed down from a Great Grandmother can be devastating, but there are ways in which we can minimise the risk. Firstly, take your ring off before taking part in sport or vigorous exercise as sharp blows or any friction from contact sports could mean it comes loose from your finger. It could also become damaged or scratched in this way, causing you to spend hundreds of pounds having it fixed.

Secondly, make sure you take your ring off before swimming in a pool; your finger will shrink and this could cause it to fall off. This is also an important point for when you are swimming in the sea or when you are washing up. Water contact is one of the most commonly reported reasons for missing rings.

To avoid misplacing it, ensure you place your ring in the same place every day and avoid leaving it near sinks or baths where it could be easily knocked into a drainpipe.

Clean Your Ring

To ensure it stays in brilliant condition, clean your ring regularly. If your ring incorporates diamonds then this is especially important as dirt and oil will damage the sparkling qualities of the stone. Try not to excessively touch your ring as the oil from your fingers will serve to dull the ring. You shouldn't use regular soaps for cleaning your ring as it will leave a residue on the surface and will dull its appearance. Special cleaning products which are designed to remove chemical build-ups on jewellery can be widely purchased from most jewellers at reasonable prices.

Ring Insurance

Ring insurance is extremely important to consider when you buy or have been given an expensive ring. Even if you think you take perfect care of your ring, you're only human and accidents can still occur. It is wise to cover yourself in case it is lost, stolen or damaged. You will need a ring valuation by a professional and well respected company; this will ensure that you know your rings true worth and that you can insure it for the appropriate amount. This is especially vital if you have an antique or vintage ring.
