subject: Water-based Lasts Longer [print this page]

Water-based sealers are more than just beautiful and environmentally friendly. These are just a few of the reasons that these coatings are here to stay:

1) Water-Based Lasts Longer

We used a Taber Abrasion machine to check the leading oil-based polyurethane versus our preferred water-based polyurethanes. The test is used to measure a finish's resistance to abrasion like scuffing and erosion due to friction. Our test outcome concluded that water-based finishes are five times more resistant in comparison with your average commercial-grade oil-based polyurethane.

2) Less VOC

VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are released as gases from certain solids or liquids. These compounds can negatively affect your health. These materials can also combine with other elements when sunlight is present to form smog, which is a major problem in some areas. Thus the government has begun restricting the amount of VOC's that can be included in a number of products.

*Water based coatings normally contain half the VOC content of traditional oil-based polyurethane coatings.

*Basic Coatings waterbased surface finishes produce less odor than fragrant OMU's.

*Green: Several of Basic(R) Coatings waterbased coatings meet the strictest of government regulations and LEED requirements.

3) Dries Faster

Water-based coatings dry in 2 to 3 hours. Oil-based finishes will require between 8 and 24 hours to dry. Because of the speedy drying time, multiple coats can be applied in one day so jobs are done quicker and your surfaces are useable sooner.

4) Faster Cure Times

Seven days is the cure time for a water-based finish, whereas it takes 30 days for an oil-based coating to sure. 90% cured in 24 hours, our preferred water-based finish means less downtime before your space is safe for use again.

5) Less Yellowing

You never need to worry regarding yellowing with water-based finishes. Oil-based finishes will turn an unsightly yellow with age and UV exposure. You can have the deep, enhanced look of oil finishes using our water-based finish that contains organic tun oil, which will provide a deeper color and retain its clarity over time with no yellowing. This includes the advantages of both water and oil based coatings.

6) Non-Flammable

Flammable petroleum distillates are Natural in oil-based polyurethanes. Water-based finishes are neither combustible nor flammable. The fumes of OMU's are likewise combustible or flammable. Rags and other supplies that have residue from OMU's on them must be kept in safety containers to prevent spontaneous combustion.
