subject: Green Cars - Suzuki's New Swift [print this page] Suzuki's new Swift will be released this autumn in the UK. Despite the fact it does not look very different from the previous model, the car press and customers are quite excited about its release. The main reason for this is the fact the car has leap forward in environmental and safety terms.
The first model to be released has a four-cylinder, 1.2 litre Dual VVT petrol engine. Suzuki says that it does 56.5mpg on an urban cycle, but if driven extremely carefully will do even better than that. Mike Hull and Dave Moss got 68.10mpg out of the new Swift during the 2010 MPG Marathon, winning the class 1 improvement category. The 1.3 litre version is due out in the first quarter of 2011 and that too improves on the current versions fuel economy. Emissions wise, both models are better than their predecessors are. The new 1.2 litre version has CO2 emissions of only 116g/km and the 1.3 version only 109g/km.
The new Swift has achieved a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating. It is fitted with electronic stability control as standard and has lower profile tyres so its handling is even better making it even easier to drive safely. In addition, it scored well in the adult occupation category and in the pedestrian category of the safety tests.
The new Swift is longer, taller, wider and has a more rounded body style than its predecessor yet does not look that different. However, its new grill and lights do help to distinguish it from previous models. Passengers will notice the difference with much more space in the back.
Swifts have a reputation for being well built this is expected to be the case with the new Swift, like its predecessor it will be built in Hungary. The exact price of the new Swift has not yet been announced, but the basic model is expected to cost around 9,500.
