subject: The Truth About Using Liposuction For Cellulite [print this page]

Women around the world loathe and dread the c-word: Cellulite. No matter your age, weight, or fitness level, if you're a woman, chances are that you have experienced the frustration of cellulite for yourself.

Even men can fall victim to this painless but emotionally debilitating affliction.

Typically appearing on the hips and outer thigh area, cellulite is caused by pockets of fat that bulge through the fibers of the muscle, creating a dimpled or "cottage cheese" appearance. This can be very discouraging, especially when you work out regularly and eat a sensible diet.

In the battle against cellulite, many women turn to liposuction, assuming that removing fat is the simplest and most effective method to reduce cellulite. Unfortunately, liposuction does not always solve the problem, and in some cases can even worsen the appearance of cellulite.

The typical liposuction procedure is performed by making small incisions in the skin, inserting a hollow tube (called a cannula) under the skin, and then using the tube to remove fat. For areas such as the waist or knees, this is relatively simple and effective.

Removing fat from such cellulite-prone areas like the thighs, however, is a more complex issue. Body fat is stored in compartments known as lobes, which are supported by your body's muscles.

As fat is added over time, those lobes become overly full, and bulge out in between muscle fibers, creating that dreaded dimply look. This is especially evident in the thigh area for most women. Removing this fat via standard liposuction can leave the skin loose and saggy, which will not improve appearance and may actually make the area look worse.

Doctors and plastic surgeons have long been aware of the failure of traditional liposuction to deliver results in treating cellulite, and have experimented with different techniques and variations in an attempt to find an effective treatment. A recent breakthrough in the field, known as Endermologie, combines liposuction technology with massage techniques to treat cellulite.

Requiring no surgery, it utilizes suction and rollers that deliver an intense massage to fat itself, smoothing out the lumps and bumps while stimulating blood flow to improve appearance.

Over the course of therapy, the bulging pockets of fat are gradually leveled to create a smoother, more even appearance. While effective in the short-term, it is not a permanent solution to cellulite. It does, however, deliver better results than traditional liposuction, with none of the surgical risks or side effects.

If you are one of the millions who suffer from cellulite, massage therapies are a better choice than liposuction. These non-invasive techniques not only improve the appearance of cellulite, but they require no anesthetic and cause no harmful side effects. Talk to your physician about using these therapies to treat your cellulite issues, because you deserve to be free from the frustration of cellulite!
