While this type of battery would not be necessary to start your car, since it only needs a short quick burst of energy and then is quickly recharged, they come in handy for use in solar electric or backup of power usage where you are going to need the energy for a prolonged period of time. They also have the benefit of being able to be charged and discharged hundreds of times which make them ideal for use on machinery that is used hours a day every day.

*Boats and water craft. Marine deep cycle batteries are used to run trolling motors, lights and even emergency radios.

*RV's and campers that have lighting systems and stoves use this type of battery to provide convenience and comfort to those who want to enjoy the great outdoors with all the comforts of home. Just try curling up under an electric blanket in a tent on a cold night and you will appreciate these batteries so much more.

*Heavy duty deep cycle batteries are used on farms, in construction and even for emergency vehicles.

*These batteries are sometimes used with generators to provide power to places that have temporarily lost their electricity.

They come in three basic types: flooded, gel or AGM. Each type has its good points and bad points. However, the most commonly used one is the flooded deep cell because, although it is the most expensive of the three, it has a long life span relative to its cost. It has also been around for a long time and people are used to the flooded deep cycle battery and have come to trust it and depend on it.

One of the great things about these batteries is that almost all of the battery can be recycled over and over again, which is important when you consider that they have lead plates and contain sulphuric acid, both of which are dangerous pollutants. However, because they can be recycled, neither the lead or the sulphuric acid is disposed of; it is simply used in making new batteries, keeping these two harmful substances contained and the environment safe.

Deep cycle batteries have many benefits and they provide energy in situations where a starter battery simply couldn't function for any real length of time. These benefits help people live and work better and more efficiently while saving on the cost and the headache of constantly replacing batteries. While they are not right for every situation they do serve a great many useful purposes.
