Durban Airport Transfers Hints and Tips on getting to and from the new Durban International Airport.

The most important thing to remember about Durban airport is that in the last few months, it has moved! The previous airport near Amanzimtoti on the South Coast of Kwa Zulu Natal was known as Louis Botha Airport for many years, but changed its name to simply Durban International Airport during the transitional years after apartheid when it became a bit insensitive to have public facilities named after the leaders who upheld the apartheid era in South Africa.

For many years, there was always talk and plans of building a new airport near the north coast area of La Mercy, which is about 35 kilometres away from the city centre. Construction at the new airport actually began in the 1970s but due to budget constraints it was put on hold until the 1990s when the limitations of the existing airport were noticed. The airport at La Mercy is now known as King Shaka International Airport and has been fully operational since May 2010.

Getting to and from King Shaka International Airport is very easy, and there is a very good selection of reliable taxi companies and shuttles that will transport you to your Durban hotels relatively inexpensively, starting from only around 7 ($10) per person in a fully air conditioned shuttle bus. If you have pre booked your car hire at Durban Airport, then you will most probably look at heading out on the N2 highway first. This is one of South Africas major highways and heads all the way down to Cape Town via the Garden Route. The M43 is to the north, and the R102 is to the west. You will of course have the option of using GPS technology in your rental cars to help you get around, and it is vital to remember that in South Africa they drive on the left hand side of the road!
