subject: The Baseball Rules You Should Know [print this page]

Baseball is played between two teams consisting of nine players each. Baseball is played outdoors in a grassy area called a baseball diamond. It is shaped in the form of a diamond consisting of four bases. The bases are white and they are called first, second, third and fourth base. Fourth base is normally called home base.

In baseball, there are action players that are closers if you will that are named infielders. There are four players that take care of the first three bases and then there is a Shortstop which floats between first and second bases and occasionally between second and third bases.

The rest of the team mates are called outfielders. There are three positions named, left fielder, center fielder and right fielder. These players have some of the most exciting times during the game as they catch and retrieve back to the bases so the opposing team won't get a home run.

The catcher has his hands full. He has to wear a face helmet just in case the ball hits him. His position is behind the current batter. The pitcher can throw many tricky throws and tries very hard to strike out the batter. He resides in front of the batter but in the middle of the field. The Umpire has be to on constant guard as it is up to him to make the call on whether or not he sees the play as safe or out. He is moving behind both the batter and catcher, sometimes from side to side but never too far away from home base as he is the gatekeeper for that play.

The name of the game is to hit the baseball, run to each base without the other team beating you to each base and tagging you out. To do this takes a little bit of strategy. Each player has three turns to strike at the bat. If by the third time you have striked the ball three times and aren't able to hit the ball it is called a strike.

Walk is called out by the Umpire if the batter has not been able to hit the ball after three times due to the fact that the pitcher has thrown the ball incorrectly or if it has come too close to the batter.

Baseball contains nine innings and is a favorite past time for many. Stadiums are filled with foods such as hot dogs, hamburgers, and garlic fries, beer, soda and wine are generally served as well. These days many upscale restaurants have opened up near the ballpark attracting much needed business. Some ball parks are not limited to just baseball games but because of their size are available for music concerts as well.
