subject: The Causes Of Mouth Cracks [print this page]

If you are wondering what the causes of mouth cracks are, you may have been under the misapprehension that these very painful splits and fissures which can occur around the mouth are causes by extremes of weather or by the aftermath of flu or a cold. Although it is true that the weather and the common cold can aggravate the condition, they are not the reason why they occur in the first place.

This condition has two main causes, a nutritional deficiency (namely, the B group of vitamins, iron and zinc) or constant dampening of the lip and surrounding mouth area. What usually happens is that the condition becomes bacterial and/or fungal in nature and then extremely difficult to eradicate. When this happens, and it is more than simple cut which heals overnight, it is known as Angular Cheilitis.

As the condition progresses, it usually becomes more severe as the fungal or bacterial infection becomes more pronounced. It can be difficult to treat, as the way to kill bacteria and fungal infection is to starve it of moisture and oxygen, both of which can be difficult to do bearing in mind the fact that the area is on the face and on the edges of the mouth.

The root causes of mouth cracks can be dealt with if you are aware of what might have brought them about. For example, if you think that nutritional deficiency could be an issue, then a good all-round supplement might help. If dampness is a problem, think about what might have caused the mouth cracks. Is it badly fitting dentures, or maybe you are prone to finger or pen sucking. What this will do is prevent further outbreaks, but the pressing issue is to kill off the current infection which is unlikely to go away on its own.
