subject: Some Reasons And Methods To Quit Smoking [print this page]

There are many reasons why it is a good idea to stop smoking. One of the main reasons that people want to quit is the financial saving. Smokers can spend up to $5000 on cigarettes a year, which is a huge amount of money. That's a new car, or a lavish holiday. The other main reason people want to give up smoking is the health benefits of quitting. It is rumored that each cigarette smoked decreases life expectancy by 5 minutes. That's a lot of your life going down the drain.

Did you know that people who do not smoke have up to 50 percent more energy than smokers do. This is down to a buildup of tar in the lungs allowing less air to get in, thus causing more air to be used for each task.

Many serious diseases can be caused by smoking. This includes, but is not limited to lung cancer, heart disease and bronchial problems. Infertility, high blood pressure and even blindness can also be caused by smoking.

Within 2 days of quitting smoking all nicotine will be gone from the body. This includes nicotine held in the brain.

If you are a smoker you will know that when you breathe it often sounds husky and ill sounding. Within 2 days of stopping smoking this will return to normal, as your bronchial tubes begin to relax.

As you can see there are many reasons to stop smoking. A few main ones are listed above but I am sure you can think of a lot more. Do your kids hate you smoking? Does your house smell foul all the time? Perhaps your spouse has a problem with you smoking that's causing arguments and friction. The list is endless, and there is help you can get if you want to quit.

Methods Of Giving Up Smoking

In this modern age, there are many different ways to quit smoking. Willpower is still the most natural way of quitting; however this only accounts around 7 percent of the population who quit. One of the most popular ways of quitting is using nicotine replacement products. These come in a range of formats, the most popular being chewing gum, a patch that you apply to the skin or a cigarette shaped instrument that you drag like a normal cigarette but there is no smoke or tar, just the nicotine in vaporized form.

Support groups and counseling have also had good results. When put in a group with others in the same situation as yourself, it helps to talk with them and find out why you smoke. Talking about things like when you smoke, and finding suitable replacements for when you usually smoke can work really well. Remember you are not alone in trying to quit, and although it may seem daunting at first, keep at it you will be able to do it in the end.
