subject: The Other Side Of Anxiety Xanax [print this page]

Alprazolam, otherwise known in the market as Xanax, is a medicine used to treat anxiety disorders. It normally requires a doctor's prescription to be able to use it, as it has harmful side effects when taken in large doses. However, some people have been dependent on this drug, not knowing that it could cause hazards to the health if taken outside the course of treatment.

One of the side effects associated with the drug is temporary loss of memory. Because of this, people tend to forget that they have already taken one. Thus, there are increased chances for them to take larger doses. Overdose of the drug causes more side effects such as impaired coordination, drowsiness, irritability, depression, sexual dysfunction and many others - including death. It could be even more harmful for pregnant or nursing women, as Xanax could also cause damage to the infant, whether born or unborn.

It can even cause more damage to people who take Xanax together with alcohol. Xanax, when mixed with any alcoholic beverages could be twice or as many times as harmful compared when taken alone. The drug is also said to cause depression or suicidal thoughts, thus, anyone suffering from those ailments should never take it.

Xanax should be taken with caution, as this drug could cause dependency - both in physical and psychological aspects. When dependents stop taking, there are also effects such as muscle twitching and tremors, and worse - withdrawal symptoms such as panic attacks, seizures, headaches, depression and insomnia. Thus, unless ordered by the doctor, Xanax should not be taken, even as an over-the-counter treatment. Xanax has this other side - which is rather the harmful side, something that should not at all be taken for granted.
