subject: Chiropractic Helps Relieve Pinched Nerves In Raleigh [print this page]

Pinched nerves can cause painful conditions, which lead to one of the extremities feeling numb. In many cases, a Raleigh Chiropractor offers procedures that help to relieve a pinched nerve.

Nerves are the message system of the body. They transport information to the brain from the respective parts of the body and to the body from the brain. A pinched nerve is much like a pinched water hose. Just as the flow of water is restricted in the hose, the flow of messages is restricted in the nerve. The brain may read this restriction as pain or as no signal coming from that part of the body. The no signal reading results in numbness of the area.

Many of the other tissues of the body may pinch a nerve. Muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons and disc of the spine may press on the nerve resulting in a pinch. To bring about relief from the pinch, the offending tissue must be moved away from the nerve.

The sciatica is a common pinched nerve that runs through the lower back into the leg. When this nerve is pinched, you may experience lower back pain as well as numbness of the leg or foot. Your foot may have a tingling feeling as if it is asleep almost continually.

Both disc and bones located in the spine can pinch the nerves. When the vertebrae are not aligned correctly, they may pinch a nerve. If disc bulge or are herniated they can press on nerves. The doctor of chiropractic may use a spinal adjustment to relieve pressure from the nerve. With disc problems, the doctor may use other procedures that allow the disc to heal.

When pressure is removed from the nerve, it may take a couple of weeks to heal. During the healing time, feeling slowly returns to the limb and pain is reduced. Leaving the nerve in a pinched position too long can result in irreversible damage. When you experience a pinched nerve, you should have an exam by a Raleigh Chiropractor to develop a plan to relieve the pinch.
