It is important for you to understand the unique requirements of educational furniture before you choose items for your classroom. Certain types of furniture can increase classroom productivity and help you to create a positive learning environment for your students. As an educator it is important that your classroom provides all the necessary equipment that your students need to be able to learn effectively.

Desks

Classroom desks are split into two main groups; student desks and the teacher's desk. The students will need a functional, practical desk that provides them with the right balance of work and storage space. Younger children often learn in just one classroom and so can be assigned their very own desk. This means they will need small amount of storage space so that they can leave some of their stationary supplies or books in the classroom. However if you are teaching older children then you will most likely see a number of students pass through your classroom every day. This means students will not be assigned their own personal desk and so you do not need to provide storage space options. However older children will need a slighter larger desk space as they will be using more textbooks and other resources. As the teacher you will need to provide yourself with adequate desk space in order for you to work and store your own equipment. Look for desks that offer plenty of drawers or an internal filing cabinet and also think about whether you want any locked drawers for storing personal belongings or confidential data.

Chairs

Children spend a lot of time sitting down at school concentrating on their learning so it is important to provide comfortable, functional chairs. If children feel uncomfortable they will fidget around and this can make it difficult for them to concentrate. Chairs should be as sturdy as possible as they will have to stand up to a lot of heavy usage. You should also think about getting some of the anti-tip designs which offer a safer option for younger children. Chairs made from plastic materials are a hygienic, safe and affordable option and these can be ergonomically designed for additional comfort.

Storage

You will need somewhere to store away all of the classroom supplies such as textbooks, paper, pens, pencils etc. This will help you to keep things tidy and organized and also reduce clutter to create a functional learning environment. If you do not have a stationary cupboard in your classroom then wall cabinets and storage containers are a good space saving storage option. Think about what kinds of materials and items you need to store away and select cabinets that have appropriate size drawers and cupboards. These will need to be durable and easy to keep clean. If you want to store and display classroom books and smaller items then shelving is also a good option.
