subject: Choosing An Overseas Nursing Career [print this page]

Nursing overseas can be very rewarding and interesting; it can offer challenges and a fresh outlook on health care systems. Lots of nurses find that nursing abroad develops and increases their professional skills greatly.

Job vacancies abroad can often vary and positions can be in a variety of different sized organisations and in both developed and developing countries.

No matter what sort of position you wish to take there are lots of issues you will need to consider before taking the plunge and moving to a foreign country to work. It is a good idea to make a list of good and bad points to help you to make the decision.

It is a good idea to register with a nursing recruiter who can advise you on all of the steps you will need to take in order to make the move . Being aware that the language spoken in the country you wish to work in may be different and getting some beginner classes to ty and get a basic understanding is a great idea.

There are many plus points to working in a foreign country and the idea of moving somewhere exotic or culturally rich is certainly appealing to many along with the lure of higher wages. The reality of working abroad is not always perfect though, working conditions are often very different than those found in the UK and adjusting to working in a different climate can be difficult.

It is extremely important that you have a clear understanding of the way in which health authorities in the country you are going to work in operate. There are often different working conditions to consider- and that goes for both developing and developed countries.

Organising moving abroad is not an easy task. You will have to look into obtaining a visa, work permits, tax regulations for the place you are going to, pensions and medical insurance before you consider leaving for pastures new.

If you are on a fixed contract and returning home after a certain period it is wise to organise your return flight home prior to leaving the country, particularly if you will be based in a rural location or developing country.
