The neck (cervical spine) is composed of vertebrae that begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae along with the ligaments (which are comparable to thick rubber bands) provide stability to the spine. The muscles allow for support and motion. The neck has a significant amount of motion and supports the weight of the head. However, because it is less protected than the rest of the spine, the neck can be vulnerable to injury and disorders that produce pain and restrict motion.

Causes of Neck Pain

One of the most usual causes of neck pain is a poor posture. Most people have bad posture habits whether when they are sleeping or during the day and they dont even realize it, even an activity that we consider harmless as reading in bed without a posture pillow can, at some moment, lead to pain and more serious problems.

Pain at the base of the thumb may be due to arthritis at the joint between the wrist bone and the knuckle bone known as the carpometacarpal joint. Arthritis at this joint is very common. Arthritic pain of this joint at the base of the thumb is made worse when there is nerve related pain and spasm in the muscles that cross the carpometacarpal joint (joint between the thumb wrist bone and the thumb knuckle bone).

Treatments of neck pain

Applying ice massages for 5 to 10 minutes at a time to a painful area within the first 48 hours of pain onset can help relieve pain as can heat, which relaxes the muscles. Heat should be applied for pains lasting greater than 48 hours. Over-the-counter pain relievers.

Rest. Lie down from time to time during the day to give your neck a rest from holding up your head. Avoid prolonged rest, since too much inactivity can cause increased stiffness in your neck muscles.

Neck exercises and stretching. Your doctor may recommend that you work with a physical therapist to learn neck exercises and stretches. A physical therapist can guide you through these exercises and stretches.

Tips To Prevent Neck Pain:

Prevention is better than cure. The tips below may help a person to gain neck pain relief:

1.Do not bend the head forwards for a long time.

2.It is better to keep away from work that demands sitting for extended hours without change in posture.

3.Avoid drooping or hanging the upper back area to the waist.

4.Do enough stretching exercises that involve rotating the neck clockwise and anti-clockwise that offer neck pain relief for sure.

Self Care:

Self-care for neck pain: If you have severe muscle pain and loss of motion in your neck, self-care should include a few simple techniques to assist with controlling these symptoms and hasten recovery:

Apply ice, a cold pack, or even a small bag of frozen vegetables, such as peas or corn, placed in a light towel, to the sore area for 10-15 minutes every few hours. This will decrease inflammation and cramping.

Use heat or cold to help stop muscle spasms, whichever one gives you the most relief. Alternating heat and cold may help. Rest your neck by wearing a soft, supportive collar or small towel rolled and placed under the chin. Do this for relief of muscle pain and loss of motion. Take care to preserve the normal curve of the neck when wearing a support.
