subject: What Good Things In Life Are You Throwing Away Because Of Smoking [print this page]

When most people think of the good things in life, they sometimes only relate them to material items like fancy homes or cars. They think of fine clothes and great vacations. When you spend a big part of your income on smoking tobacco, and these days it can cost a lot for an average paid worker, you might very well be missing an opportunity to have nicer and more expensive things. Instead of a week long cruise on a ship to some exotic place, you might have to settle for renting a dingy for the weekend and drive to a local lake. Instead of living in a home in a slightly better neighborhood, you could have to settle for a mobile home in a trailer park.

Those are some of the good things in life that you might miss out on because you smoke, but those things are nothing compared to the golden things you might miss. Things like a longer and healthier life. If you are still fairly young now and are just starting a family and you smoke, you might not have even given a thought to years in the future when you will want to be able to play in your back yard with your grandchildren. If that seems like a dream to you now, it might very well be just a dream because if you continue to smoke tobacco for all the years in between now and then, you might never live to see them.

Even if you do live that long and you are around to see your grandchildren, will you be able to enjoy any part of it? Will you be dragging an oxygen bottle with you everywhere you go? Will you be bedridden because you have a serious disease like cancer that is slowly killing you? Some people that smoke for years and get cancer are not even lucky enough to have a slow killing kind. Sometimes a disease like pancreas cancer can sneak up on you and kill you within a year. Of course, whether you consider living longer with cancer is a lucky thing or not could only be determined after you have it and you find out first hand how much suffering there is involved.

Spending quality time with family and being healthy enough to enjoy that time and those people are the real good things in life that you could easily miss out on if you continue to smoke tobacco. The good thing is that while you are still young you hold the power in your hand to change your entire future just by quitting now. The longer you wait to stop smoking, the more that power slips away until one day it might be too late to change anything at all except that fact that you will surely die because of smoking.
