subject: Protecting Your Hearing When You Work At An Opera House [print this page]

Although opera is beautiful and can be incredibly moving, working at an opera house means that you are exposed to louder levels of music on a continual basis than most of us are and it is important that you take a few added measures to protect your hearing. Opera is characterized by high notes and sharp pitches and therefore it is important that you try and minimize the sound that you are exposed to. As long as you take a few added measures to protect yourself you shouldn't experience any problems.

For starters, be sure to expose yourself as minimally as possible to the opera so that you are not taking in the high level of music on a daily basis. If you work as an usher or at the ticket booth, do what you can to make sure that you stay outside of the theater and away from the music. Hearing it once or twice will not do any permanent damage but you should be cognizant of trying to give your ears a break every so often and not exposing yourself to the loud sounds and notes.

Also be sure to listen to soothing music at low or moderate levels on your way to and from work. As the nature of your job requires you to listen to high pitched music on a daily basis, it is important that you take a few precautions to ensure that your hearing is well preserved and that you don't suffer any damage. The more that you actively regulate the sounds and noises that you are exposed to, the more that you will be able to feel in control and know for certain that your sense of hearing will not be affected.

Do your best to cover your ears on your way to and from work as you don't want to get an ear infection as if not properly taken care of, it can serious damage to your hearing. Simply wrap a scarf or sweater around your head and do your best to protect your ears. The more proactive you are about controlling the sounds that are coming in and the level of noise, the healthier you will ultimately feel. Make sure that you take a few breaks during the day to be sure that you are giving yourself a few bouts of peace and quiet during the day. The more that you alternate between quiet and the high pitched sounds associated with your work, the more that you will be able to feel better and ultimately not experience any issues. Do your best to take care of yourself and if you notice any decline in your health, seek professional help immediately. Your body is your best indicator so be sure to pay attention to the signs it gives you and see a doctor if you feel the need to do so. With the proper care and a little foresight however, you shoudn't have any issues.
