subject: iPad Resolution - Why It Matters, Does It Matter [print this page]

With the influx of high definition technology not only in cinema and television but from every single gadget that allows video capture, it is quite a surprise that Apple launched its iPad at an obsolete 4:3 resolution.

Why is resolution a concern?

First of all, the default aspect of high definition is 16:9 which means viewing HD at a low resolution compresses the video's format. This can create video alterations such as stretching or flattening of images.

Secondly, HD is not just about video but about sound quality as well. It is all about surround sound that digital stereo cannot equal.

Besides the low-res video capacity of the iPad, there is no HDMI output to enable its user to view downloaded videos on the iPad through an HD capable monitor. With this existing market, the 4:3 resolution is definitely a major concern for most consumers.

Another arguable point is that gaming platforms and even online gaming sites currently run on high end video graphic resolutions to provide an aesthetic and realistic feel for gamers. Unfortunately, the iPad may not be able to support this requirement due to its video limitations.

The iPad is undeniably an innovative step Apple took. However, the ultimate goal of Apple's creations from the iPod classic to the Nano, to the iTouch, and even to the iPad is to be the number one choice as an entertainment gadget. But with the current trend, resolution matters in multimedia technology. Apple's next generation iPad definitely has a lot of room to make up for.
