subject: Low E Glass, What Type Should You Use For Exterior Home Windows? [print this page]

When it comes to the installation of windows, the glass is one of the most important components. Sure you need a strong frame to hold it all together and parts that will make it stay well maintained, but the type of glass you use can really make a difference, especially when it comes to energy consumption.

Depending on where you live, you may find yourself experiencing particularly high energy bills. The type of windows you choose can actually make a difference in what you wind up paying in the long run which is why good quality windows are a great investment.

Glass ratings are what will tell you how efficient a particular type will be in the end. Here, the lower the number, the better the glass. Glass ratings consist of two key numbers: U values, and solar heat gain coefficient, or (SHGC). The U value is a measure of how well a window will keep you warm during the winter months. The other, SHGC is a measure of the ability for the window to reflect the heat away, thus keeping you cool during the hot summer months.

Low E is a first generation glass technology that uses metal adhered to glass. This modern type of glass uses this technology in a very thin layer that reflects heat back into the home. Originally, Low E glass was applied to single pane windows. Here, it has to be hard coated which involved attaching a thin layer of tin to molten glass. This is not as efficient as other Low E coatings, but is still able to withstand a cleaning if it is not done too abrasively.

As time went on, the coatings became more effective. Silver was eventually used to develop micro fine reflective surfaces that served to greatly increase the energy performance of glass units. These layers are more softly coated and are sandwiched between two panes of glass. This makes them easier to clean as the use of abrasive cleaners is no longer an issue.

The double panes plus the added coating serve to keep heat in when winter descends and the cool air in during the summer. This will also save you money because your energy bills wont be as high. These windows are also easy to maintain.

If you are interested in using Low E glass in your new replacement windows, talk to your local installers to find one who is reputable and able to do the job to your satisfaction. Remember, you are paying for the new windows which will be an important investment in your home. You want them to last a long time, so quality is of the ut most importance. Find out what others think of their Low E glass and who they would recommend. Because it is becoming so popular, you should have no problem finding someone who has it. If you are unable to do so, ask the companies you are considering for references. You can then contact those references to ask the questions you have before making a decision on who installs your new Low E Glass windows.
