subject: Learn to Say "No" [print this page]

Today everyone seems to have a very hectic schedule and there never seems to be enough time for the important things in life anymore. Sometimes saying the word "no" can be a hard thing to do, but is very important in reducing every day stress. Part of being organized is being able to keep up with daily life, reducing the stress and still having enough time for family and the fun stuff too. When you commit to too many things and take on more than you can handle, it can be very stressful and very time consuming. It is then time to ask yourself, "Is really worth being committed to so many different things?" Too many after school activities with the kids, too many parties or get-togethers, too much volunteer work, too many household chores, too many projects at work, the list goes on and on.

Next time you are asked to add something to your schedule ask yourself if it is truly worth your time and possibly getting stressed over trying to fit it in. If it's not, try saying a very polite "no thank you" or at the very least ask if someone else can help share the task at hand. Set up a family schedule to share the household chores to include the kids and when volunteering, ask that everyone do their part to help out.

Some people also reserve one day a week for family time only and use that as a general rule to help them politely turn down invitations and requests. It's also a great way to get in that quality time with your family and help reduce the stress by taking that one day to just relax and recuperate from the week's activities.
